Abstract

The gas and heat supply (GHS) industry consists of a sector of supplying heat and hot water to residential and industrial complexes, as well as a sector of supplying gas to residential, commercial, industrial, and power plants. The GHS industry will grow even more in the future. This paper tries to analyze the economic effects of the GHS industry and derive the implications of the result through a comparative analysis of Korea and Japan. The most recently announced input-outputs tables for 2014 and 2012 are used for Korea and Japan, respectively are utilized and inter-industry analysis technique is applied. In particular, production-inducing effect, value-added creation effect, and wage-inducing effect, supply shortage effect, and price pervasive effect are investigated using demand-side model, supply-side model, and Leontief price model, respectively. The results reveal that the production-inducing effect, value-added creation effect, and wage-inducing effect of Japan’s GHS industry are 1.9 times, 3.6 times, and 10.7 times, respectively, larger than those of Korea’s one. In other words, even if Korea produces or invests the same amount in the GHS industry, the overall effects of stimulating production or boosting the economy, the effect of increasing gross domestic product, and the effect of expanding employment in Korea are lower than those in Japan. On the other hand, the supply shortage effect and the price pervasive effect of Korea’s GHS industry are 1.6 times and 6.2 times, respectively, greater than those of Japan’s one. This indicates that stable supply and price management of gas and heat is more important in Korea than Japan.
