Abstract
In typography, arranging letters, from top to bottom according to the structure, is common. Many typographers customarily use this arrangement method, but there is no defined definition, function, or characteristic for this method. The purpose of this study is to define ‘downward arrangement’ as the arrangement of letters from top to bottom in accordance with the structure.
In addition, it is to compare Hangeul and Roman typography characteristics to see what morphological characteristics each letter has and what differences the two letters have in common. As a method of research, Hangeul and Roman typography works using downward arrangement were collected as examples, focusing on books, papers, and websites. After deriving the characteristics of the downward arrangement based on the collected works, an example image was presented and discussed to help understand each characteristic. The results of comparing the characteristics of each letter derived are as follows. First, the number of downward arrangements in Roman is limited, but Hangeul can be matched in various ways, such as 'single letter downward arrangement' and ‘individual letter downward arrangement’. Second, Roman have a limited number of meaning emphasis through downward arrangement, but Hangeul can easily emphasize meaning through downward arrangement. Third, Roman is difficult to ‘match the number of letters downward arrangement’, but Hangeul is easy. Fourth, Roman and Hangeul are possible to downward arrangement of a similar letters. Fifth, Roman and Hangeul can be downward arrangement using vertical strokes of letters. Through this study, it was found that Hangeul could use downward arrangement in various ways compared to Roman due to its characteristics.
