Abstract

Paintings of sculpture stones of Han dynasty, as a particular artistic expression to serve funeral customs in China ancient age, are decorative collections carved from grottoes, lintels, ancestral halls, tomb chambers, and coffins, etc. They are regarded as art works that stones are used to be raw materials, on which knives are used to carve. These artistic works are well known as a great quantity, rich contents, and varied styles. In recent years, more and more scholars have been paying attention to Han dynasty sculpture stones, and have got some achievements. Through the study, it offers us a better understanding to the formative language expressed by Han dynasty sculpture stones, and the great influence on modern design, and makes us find more artistic values. Meanwhile, Han dynasty stones make use of techniques of line reliefs and line engravings to apply in characteristics of two-dimensional space, which are used to be expressed in three-dimensional space. Hence, new multi-media works are, of course, expected to be created by the combination of many formative languages expressed by Han Dynasty sculpture stones.
