Abstract

A comprehensive analysis of the historical development of health equipment is needed to design health equipment that meets people"s current needs. This study aims to organize the development of fitness equipment design step by step and analyze the change in the importance of design elements according to the development stage of each fitness equipment design. Additionally, by comparing the design characteristics of health equipment at each stage, the study aims to identify future user needs changes for health equipment.
The research results and contents of this paper are as follows. First, In this study, the evolution of health equipments are categorize into four stages: the initial form stage of health equipment design, the health-purpose design stage, the everyday use design stage, and the IoT design stage. Second, 16 types of fitness equipment design elements rearranged through user surveys were divided into three groups. Internal factors, external factors, and activity factors. Third, Heuristic evaluation was conducted to find out how much of the above 16 design elements were reflected in the development of fitness equipment from the past to the present. As a result, when looking at the change in the overall importance of design elements, aesthetics, convenience, and safety are emerging compared to usability factors directly related to physical training, such as mobility, maneuverability, stability, and durability, which were important in the past.
