Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study was to critically explore the existential vacuum of modern people and limitations of freedom in leisure, and to present the direction of leisure participation in order to cope with existential vacuum based on existentialism. Methods To achieve these research objectives, the direction of leisure participation was suggested based on the four core concepts of existentialism (love, solitude, death, and self-transcendence). Result First, leisure engagement should develop deep relationships in which each person in valued for themselves. This is an expression of love. Second, engagement in solitary leisure should be a time of self-care and self-reflection. Third, high risk activities (rock climbing, sky diving, etc.) should provide reminders of the participants’ mortality, there by teaching people to live in the present moment. Fourth, artistic leisure (painting, writing, etc.) should be a pathway to escape from one’s daily pressure through art activities. Conclusion These results expand Pieper's understanding of the ontological leisure concept, which emphasizes leisure as a state of existence. In addition, in order to deal with an existential vacuum, leisure should not be devoted to activities to escape reality, but should be a means of expressing self-transcendence.
