Abstract
We explores how auto-progression as a key component of seniority-based pay affects wage differentials by seniority for production workers, white-collar workers and service workers, utilizing the surveyed data on Responses of HRM and Job Training to the Deferred Retirement Age. We also analyse, for the white-collar sample, how the proportions of job-based pay and performance pay affect wage differentials by seniority. The results indicate that auto-progression has insignificantly negative effects on wage differentials by seniority, but that it has significantly positive and negative effects on wage differentials by seniority respectively for the production workers in the unionized sector, and for the white-collar workers in the unionized sector. The results of the study for the white-collar workers indicate that the proportion of job-based pay or performance pay does not affect wage differentials by seniority significantly. Finally the results are summarized and drawn their implication that the mere formal change of wage system is not enough to reduce the wage differentials by tenure.
