Abstract

This study analyzes the political situation in South Korea during the 1970s-80s, focusing on the National Security Act of Korea, a notorious anti-communist law that infringed on basic human rights. It examines this context through the lens of artistic response, specifically Min Chung-ki’s "The Chronicle of Mr. Han" created in 1984. This study highlights the similarities between the totalitarian language control depicted in George Orwell’s 1984 and the National Security Act of South Korea at that time, emphasizing the significance of Min’s work in this context. Min’s “The Chronicle of Mr. Han”, comprising 13 etchings, is a transmedia storytelling of Hwang Sok-yong’s novel of the same title. This study comparatively analyzes Hwang’s original work and Min’s reinterpretation, focusing on the political ideologies mediated through language and the violent arbitrariness inherent in the language supporting these ideologies. Drawing on the perspectives of linguists Norman Fairclough and Haig Bosmajian, this study examines how Min understood and portrayed Korea’s ideological landscape and Cold War reality through various encounters and interactions between individuals, as articulated through verbal and textual communications. By illuminating the power structures and ideological realities of contemporary Korean society as mediated through language, Min not only expands the conventional boundaries between literature and art, and between text and image, but also challenges existing perceptions of art’s social role.
