Abstract

In this article, I attempt to recherche some characteristic aspects of Japanese ‘Freeter’ movement through participation observation and deep-interview. The changes of conditions of work and life requires the Trade Unions to be a mutual aid organization. For this reason, Japanese freeter unions have a tendency to superpose a ‘intermediate’ organization to itself, or to make itself a communal organization. And the activities of trade union, including the labour-counselling, had to deterritorialise itself from traditional labour movement to a ‘social movement’. Lastly, owing the cultural generation gap between the elder generation and ‘Lost Generation’, and cause of reproach of the one in the form of ‘self-responsibility’, they have made a singular cultural style of freeter movement, that takes a paradoxical form which the light and joyful demonstration style represented by ‘sound-demo’ coexists with the younger’s wrath which sometimes takes antagonistic shape.
