Abstract

The purpose of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of various New Space Age design cases, with a specific focus on evaluating them from a sociocultural perspective, in order to gain a deeper awareness of the social and cultural factors that shape space industry design, and to provide insights into the future direction of design in this quickly-evolving field. By examining the history of the 20th-century space industry, it can gives a better understanding of how design has transformed in the 21st century. In the 20th century, the space race drove numerous space programs, and designers focused on enhancing the interior environment for astronauts. However, the 21st-century ushered in the New Space Age, characterized by the predominance of private enterprises and the commercialization and popularization of the space industry. This stands in contrast to the historical context of the past space industry and design. The shift in paradigm has resulted in changes in consumer culture and social perceptions. However, the development of the space industry has led to the neglect of issues of discrimination against minority groups. As a consequence, this matter has emerged as a significant concern in recent times. Nonetheless, the widening of the space industry's consumer and participant base has provided a glimpse of the potential for a shift towards more inclusive design. Despite design being an essential component of the space industry, it has certain limitations. As the space market is projected to expand in the future, this study seeks to uncover the evolving trends and limitations of both the industry and design by conducting a socio-cultural analysis of the 21st century. Through this analysis, it is anticipated that the evolving trends in the industry, along with the constraints in design, will be identified. Moreover, this will enable reflection on the current passive stance of the design field towards space, facilitating the exploration of future design directions in the space industry.
