Abstract
A 3-5-GHz CMOS ultrawideband (UWB) transmitter is implemented using 0.18-μm CMOS technology. The transmitter is composed of switched LC VCO and digital pulse generator (DPG). The proposed DPG provides the short and tunable VCO switching pulse. The measured UWB center frequency range is 3.5-4.4 GHz with the trimmable capacitor bank of LC VCO, and the pulse duration is tunable from 1 to 3 ns by virtue of DPG. The measured energy efficiency per pulse is 5.8% and the power consumption is 0.22 mW at 10 Mbps without the buffer amplifier. The chip core size is 350 × 1000 μm 2.
