A Framework for Seismic Risk Assessments in the Buyeo Baekje Historic Areas

Abstract

This study provides a quantitative index of site amplification in the Buyeo Baekje Historic Areas and proposes a framework for seismic risk assessment in historic areas, linking both seismic hazard and seismic performance assessments. Field seismic tests and one-dimensional site response analyses were performed to evaluate site amplification, and seismic microzonation maps were prepared to visualize the regional site amplification potential. To synthesize seismic performance assessment methodologies for heritage structures, shaking table tests, centrifuge tests, the finite element method (FEM), and the discrete element method (DEM) were investigated. The results of site response analyses indicate that the historic areas are susceptible to local site effects due to subsurface conditions, showing the potential for resonance at short periods. Procedural links and differences in objectives among these methodologies indicate that they serve distinct yet complementary roles, and that comparative and verifiable analyses are effective in reducing uncertainty. As a result, the integration of methodologies for seismic risk assessments was found to be appropriate and effective for reducing uncertainties in historic areas.
