Abstract

This study attempted to analyze the importance of historical entities (ex: Human, culture, event, etc.) through Wikipedia texts, focusing on two stages. First, it extracted historical entities from Wikipedia and analyzed how they are related. Second, this paper proposed an algorithm which calculate its historical importance and assessed the utility. This study was able to estimate the scores of historical importance from Wikipedia texts, using the mentioned algorithm. The scope of historical entities handled in this study was limited to the countries within the category of Wikipedia. In terms of the measurement of historical importance, Google's PageRank algorithm and each historical document's page view were used. To prove the utility of measurements and algorithm, importance scores were given to a total of 1,406 historical texts from five historians, and an answer set was developed. The algorithm was compared to the answer set created by the historians through four tests. With, the test results, it was able to figure out the characteristics of historical importance conceived by the historians and the historical importance calculated by the algorithm.
