Abstract

The accident rate of railways is relatively lower than that of road transportation, but railway accidents may cause serious injury. This study aims to investigate factors influencing accident injury severity by railway type based on railway accident record data collected from 2006 to 2017. Railways are divided into two types of urban and regional railways (including high speed railways), and the ordered probit model is used to analyze accident injury severity by railway type. The results show that the accident variables of time, site, causation and vehicle involved significantly affect accident injury severity for each railway type. The weather variable significantly affects accident injury severity only for regional railways. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the reduction of accident injury severity for each railway type and to improve railway safety.
