Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze university students’ criteria for registering in foreign language courses as general education through AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process). Five main factors and nineteen sub-factors were found using empirical research methods based on the survey conducted with 300 university students from September 26th through October 7th in 2015. The results show that ‘student factor’ is the most important main factor, and ‘interest in the foreign language’ is the most important sub-factor followed by ‘interest in the country and its culture’, ‘helpful for career and employment’ and ‘professor’s ability to communicate with students’. In addition, criteria were different among the different foreign language groups (English, Chinese and Japanese). The findings of this empirical study demonstrate that curriculum development in foreign language courses should reflect students’ needs.
