Abstract

The Metallic bipolar plates of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) are composed of one center plate and two shielded slot plates. In the design of the shielded slot, the mechanical behavior of the shielded slot plate should be analyzed. Due to the large size and repetition of the shielded slot plate, an effective simulation method is required. In this work, numerical and analytic evaluations were conducted to obtain the anisotropic properties of the shielded slot plate. FEM simulations were conducted to evaluate the mechanical responses of the unit cell. The homogenized material model for a plastically compressible anisotropic core was employed to simulate compressive and bending behavior of the shielded slot plate which has full orthotropic anisotropy. The coefficient of orthotropic elasticity and coefficients of the yield criterion were employed for the homogenized property of the shielded slot plate. A comparison Is made between the three-dimensional full model and the homogenized model.
