Abstract

This paper intends to show the case example where remote places such as small village or island can have sustainable power sources using renewable energies such as photovoltaic and wind power. Most islands in Korea have used diesel generation, but are now confronting with higher oil price and carbon-emission restriction. Thus, in this study, a smart grid system, which has photovoltaic (PV) panel, wind turbine (WT) and energy storage system (ESS) and excludes diesel generator, is demonstrated. The loading part of the system includes advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), electric vehicle (EV), and desalination plant. Also, electric supply monitoring and automatic operating systems are implemented to check and cope with any problem in the system. For future work, ESS expansion and intelligent demand forecasting are considered. We hope this system to give a good example for other system developments.
