Abstract

A methodology is developed to detect contacts between slider and disk, during head seek, using AE sensor. The head/disk contact is observed during random and standard seeks, whereas no contact is detected during track following. During standard and random seeks, the torsion mode of slider excitation was observed at 680 kHz. By changing the location of the AE sensor, more than an order of magnitude increase in the sensitivity was observed. This methodology could be applied to find the spacing loss during seeking as well as to explain disk defect in read/write operation.
