Abstract
There has been a change in perception regarding CSR, from meaning simple charitable activities to strategic investment activities that create value for the firm. However, although the strategical aspect of CSR has gained prominence, the reality is that many firms are still carrying out CSR in simple forms of social contribution. The essence of CSR can be found in internalizing social costs, which leads to corporations voluntarily taking responsibility in social contribution activities. In this regard, the market economy is taking into consideration not only competition and efficiency standards but also social contribution standards. This case study assumes that CSR can be a measure of the evolution of the market economy, and introduces cases of LG Display’s CSR focusing on social contribution activities. This paper introduces and classifies LG Display’s CSR case into employee participation type, shared value creation type, social issue solution type, and win-win type. First, the employees' participation type aims to show customers authenticity and enhance the company's reputation through the participation of employees and labor unions. Second, the shared value creation type is to link business and manufacturing areas. Third, the social problem solving type is to support the welfare of lower-class children and adolescents. Representative activities include the IT power plant project, which aims to improve the ability of IT for the digital divide group by supporting multimedia rooms for children's welfare facilities, and the Nanum-nuri project which aims to create jobs for disabled people. Fourth, the win-win type provides technical support, management support, safety and health environment support, and financial support to partner companies in order to increase mutual growth capacity by enlarging cooperation and partnership activities with major partners. This paper intends to broaden the understanding of CSR through the case of LG Display, which is currently actively participating in the establishment of a strategy and decision-making system with the goal of sustainable management.
