Abstract

Conventional PHC (pretensioned spun high strength concrete) pile head grinding and crushing work is labor-intensive, and its quality and productivity are greatly affected by the skills and experience of the laborers and operators. Thus, several machines for crushing PHC pile heads have been developed in order to improve the productivity, safety, and quality of this process. The primary objectives of this study are to build a field prototype for the automation of PHC pile head grinding and crushing works and to present the results obtained from laboratory tests. A conceptual model is also proposed in this study, based on the improvements identified from the laboratory tests. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for future improvements are proposed concerning the value of developing and implementing the automated PHC pile head grinding and crushing machine.
