Effect of Horizontal Position and Width of Box Tail Wing on Aerodynamics and Longitudinal Static Stability of BWB Aircraft

Abstract

It has been widely researched for the new type of airliner to take the place of the conventional one in terms of high flight efficiency. Among lots of types, BWB aircraft is thought of as the next-generation configuration of airliner, and many researchers have tried to apply it for the configuration of the small size of aircraft. This results in that the small size of BWB aircraft should have been operated in subsonic region and then, leads to flight stability problem. For this reason, we suggest box tail wing on the small BWB aircraft to deal with that problem. On this research, we analyze aerodynamics and longitudinal static stability with some variables of it, which are the box tail wing’s horizontal position and width. For the case of box tail wing’s position, it is necessary to position the box wing at a sufficient distance not affecting the body to get high aerodynamics and longitudinal static stability. For the width case, as the width increases, the lift-to-drag ratio decreases, but longitudinal static stability is improved. Through this research, it is expected that it will help design the optimal box tail wing for the flight efficiency of the small BWB aircraft according to the flight conditions.
