Abstract

This study introduces a method of applying parameters appropriately to image specifications to improve the compression efficiency of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and set partitioning in hierarchical tree (SPIHT) algorithms, which are widely used in frame memory compression (FMC). The proposed method has the advantage of being very easy to be applied because the proposed method does not require any structural change and does not affect the application of transform techniques such as DWT. It also solves the problem that fundamentally hinders compression efficiency by making more magnitude bits compressible by reducing unnecessarily allocated bits. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve an average PSNR improvement of 0.92 dB.
