Abstract
Linear birefringence behavior of Rb2ZnCl4, K2ZnCl4, and [N(CH3)4]2ZnCl4 were studied in the critical region of the normal-incommensurate phase transition. Exisence of linear birefringence tail above the transition temperature was observed. It was ascribed to the fluctuation effect on the linear birefringence. Results of scaling analysis imply that the exponent of LB behavior is not 1 - α but 2β, contrary to the previous LB study. Contribution of the fluctuation to linear birefringence behavior is discussed comparing to XRD experiments.
