Abstract
Background IoT (nternet of Things) technology-based products are increasing along with advances in smart technologies and the spread of IT network environments. The objects of product users' interaction are also expanding to the physical elements of a product, the App that forms one system with the product, and to other networked products/systems. As a result, it is necessary to redefine what should be dealt with importantly in product design education. This study aims to propose an education process for IoT-based product design education, specifically focusing on the process of the integrated visualization of ideas of physical products and App screens.
Methods For this study, prior studies on product design concepts and design education processes were reviewed and the characteristics of user experience (UX) design to be considered for IoT-based products were investigated. Then, based on examples of class projects with the subjects of IoT product design, this research proposes an education process model that can develop capabilities of visualizing UX design ideas of IoT products.
Result The design visualization education process model for IoT products proposed in this study focuses on the process of visualizing and developing user experience (UX) ideas of product concepts combining IoT products and App service.
Conclusion As the application of IT network technology to everyday products expands, cultivating the ability to propose new concepts of experiences with IoT products is becoming more important in product design education. The education process proposed in this study is expected to contribute to the development of designers' capabilities to present product concepts and visualization outputs while considering the characteristics of the changing technological environment.
