Abstract
Profile machining with cutter radius compensation is widely used in die and mould manufacturing. Automotive die makers are trying to use 3D profiling especially, in which z-values vary along the profile for trimming or flange dies. However, there has been little research on the technological requirements and implementation issues on the tool-path generation of 3D profiling. This paper raises the importance and interest of 3D profiling using cutter radius compensation, and summarizes the requirements and issues. Keeping machining width and depth are specific requirements of 3D profiling. Issues of offsetting algorithm and sources of controller alarms are discussed.
