Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) volunteer members’ needs to develop teacher re-education programs for teaching competence development for KOICA Korean teachers. Over 200 KOICA’s volunteers are sent every year to developing countries in order to introduce the Korean language and culture. Although playing important roles in teaching Korean in various educational institutions, these volunteer members seem to have difficulty in continuing their Korean teaching careers after their volunteer missions. This is because many of them did not major in the Korean language education or have not had relatively enough teaching experience in Korea. To help the volunteers continue their career as Korean teachers, it is necessary to develop re-education programs based on practical understanding of actual teaching sites and the volunteers’ situations.
To deal with this issue, this study conducted a survey asking 132 KOICA’s Korean language education volunteer members about the direction of teacher re-education programs for them. In the result, four guidelines for enhancing their career competitiveness have come into view: a) strengthening teaching skills online to meet this new contact-free era, b) practical teaching training for Korean culture education, c) flexible curriculum modification to meet the needs of local learners and teaching conditions, and d) practical teaching skills for preparation of Korean tests, such as TOPIK and EPS-TOPIK. In addition to the result, the volunteers want trainings for career path development as Korean teachers.
