Abstract

A novel laser assisted hybrid process (CNC+laser) was developed to fabricate grooves for a linear bearing and to join ABS and polycarbonate. The developed process increased the fabrication speed from 200mm/min to 1000mm/min with superior quality for linear slide oil lubrication. 30Watt diode laser was also combined with CNC machining center for machining and joining of two polymers (ABS and polycarbonate plates). The developed technique shortened two steps of fabrication to one step process in a single machine with higher productivity. It also decreased the tool wear and breakage by using noncontact laser processing. To synchronize the CNC system and laser system, a special program was designed for easy control of operation and process management purpose in industrial applications.
