Abstract

This paper presents a model of the first CIGRE benchmark HVDC system in PSS/E. The model was composed of three parts which: equation converting, DC line, and the control mode selection. The equation conversion uses different equations to calculate the dc voltage and dc power according to normal and abnormal conditions. The DC line calculates the dc current at both dc transmission lines using the dc voltage derived by the equation conversion. The ABB and AREVA control selections are investigated to determine the control mode selection model. Simulation studies have been carried out in PSCAD as well as PSS/E to confirm the performance. The simulation results of PSS/E are similar to those of PSCAD. PSS/E cannot analyze the valve state or firing level such as the harmonic instability or the firing control of the converter.
