Abstract

New construction for public transport in congested urban areas will involve tunnel excavation adjacent to existing building foundations and services due to the lack of surface space. Careful assessment of the deep wall-soil-tunnel interaction situations is relatively new, currently only limited information is available. This paper presents physical model and numerical studies of this interaction. Two-dimensional laboratory model tests were performed using an idealised multi-sized rod material to represent a frictional granular material. Close range photogrammetry provided detailed displacement and strain data. Wall movements, material deformation patterns and strain data from the finite element analysis output are shown to compare well with the equivalent physical model tests.
