N2 - DC-link capacitors are generally used in forms connected in parallel or in series called the capacitor bank to fulfill the requirements in voltage rating and capacitance. However, since the capacitor is one of the bulkiest and most expensive components of an inverter, optimizing the configuration of the DC-link capacitor bank is required. Furthermore, capacitors are considered one of the reliability-critical parts in power electronics systems and thus play a crucial role in the reliability of PV inverters. Therefore, the DC-link capacitor bank has to be designed by considering the lifetime as well as the cost, volume, etc. This paper presents a reliability-oriented design procedure of the DC-link capacitor bank of the NPC inverter in a 30-kW PV system by considering different factors such as mission profile, DC-to-AC ratio of the PV system, and PWM methods of the PV inverter with optimization in terms of lifetime, cost, volume, and cross-sectional area to achieve the target lifetime of the NPC inverter.
