Abstract

Recent advancement of the high-speed internet infrastructure and increased number of users have created an environment providing a wide range of digital contents using voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology. The purpose of this project was to devise a design for a high-end, office-friendly VoIP tablet phone. Therefore, the product aimed to carry out exclusive tasks and to display unique appearance. In this project, diverse factors such as working environment, patterns of phone usage, and specifications of hardware for the office phones were analyzed to redefine the identity of VoIP tablet phones. The direction of the product design was first defined by fulfilling the engineering requirements and user scenario. Then, multiple approaches were considered to create an appearance significantly different from the existing products. Moreover, the design of the product aimed to rearrange the PC-friendly environment of current office network into VoIP terminal-friendly settings. Although some of the radical designs were excluded here due to their lack of practicality, the products of this project still provide high potential utility as office-friendly tablet phones because they successfully combine both a conventional office phone and a tablet PC that can be operated in a ubiquitous computing environment. The VoIP tablet phones suggested here are novel products catered to the needs of today’s office environment, and the outcomes of the project will be further reflected to the development of affordable VoIP tablet phones in the future.
