Abstract

A zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) boost converter with wide ZVS range is proposed in this paper. A ripple-free cell is added to a conventional two-switch boost converter. The ripple-free cell provides a ripple-free input current and ZVS operation of two switches. Due to the ZVS feature, the switching loss is significantly reduced. However, the conduction loss due to the ripple-free cell increases. Especially at light loads, the conduction loss is much larger than the switching loss. Therefore, by disabling the ripple-free cell, the efficiency at light load is improved. The ZVS feature is maintained still at light load. The operation principle and steady-state analysis of the proposed converter are provided. A prototype of the proposed converter is developed, and its experimental results are presented for validation.
